Judges' Comments
Dream Through Langauge is an essay compilation on many literary works from Singapore and Malaysia. These essays contains articles written in rich language with clear structure. In order to fill the gaps in the written history, the book points out not only the historical significance of the works but also their literary merits.
In this book, which has a total of 18 articles, mostly works of fiction are discussed, but there are also autobiographical works like 'Naadu Vittu Naadu', 'Sivagangai Thodangi Sisangang Varai'. In this way, when fiction and non-fiction are analyzed together, the reader is able to compare and realize the similarities and differences between fictional depiction and real life, and aspects that have changed or remained unchanged over time.
Another notable contribution of the author is the intertextuality that abounds in these essays. This aspect, which shows the author's extensive reading and clarity of thinking, gives added value to the reader. For example, in the essay written about the novel Peichi, the writer enters to write about novel Peichi only after inquiring about a deity Periyachi and giving a detailed background on an article she wrote in another book.
In each article, the author compares what she read in the book with her own experiences as a first-generation diaspora Tamil, how she came to know the book, how she felt about reading it, the changes she felt after reading it, how she evaluated the content and some of the book's specific information and attitudes. By doing this this work has added strength to the continuing development of the creative nonfiction writing genre in Singapore, from various aspects.
