Mediocre
These lines were written in 2023. The pandemic is over, but the world is far from healing. It is love that keeps it whole. It is death that brings about pain. Perhaps, the catalyst for love is death itself? Could love and death simply be our own reflection? I tried to use love and death and their intertwining relations to present the situation that human have put ourselves in, and the way we face it. How do we answer to our souls?

Judges' Comments
Naming this collection of poems Mediocre is self-deprecation by the poet. Even though this is only Wang’s second poetry collection, he has been writing for many years. On the title page, the author dedicated his work to “the lives lost in the pandemic”. This is a book of recollections that refuses to forget. With keen insights and rich emotions, Wang uses highly innovative language to speak for the unspeakable, describes our tragic experiences with moving power, and writes about the grief and despair of the darkest hour. In the book, he faces death and asks questions about life and death from start to end. He wrote: We attend funerals all our lives/Only at the last funeral, we/become the protagonists. Showcasing the independent insights expected of a poet, Wang completed this masterpiece that is commensurate with the times. His poems shine with the melancholy of poetic beauty through their idealism and humanitarian spirit.

Short Notes with Wang Zhe
What does "Mata Hati | 心眼 | Eye of the Heart | மனக்கண் வழியே" mean to you in writing?
I observe people, and everything else around me, and ultimately, they are restored and reorganized in my mind with each of their unique element.
Writing is the incubator that completes the process from the eyes to the mind.
What does your writing process look like? Do you type or write? Are there multiple drafts, long pauses, or sudden bursts of activity?
I wait, I listen. The theme will speak to me, and I gradually create a draft. It is as if I am working on a block of raw marble, I place my hands on it, feel its inner form, and I chisel away the parts that are unnecessary, until the true form reveals itself. Finally, I polish it to ensure there are no superfluous words.
Usually, completing a piece of writing takes about two weeks.
Sometimes, I write on paper, but mostly I write on electronic devices. However, during those two weeks of writing, the process is agonizing.
What does your working space look like?
A room with a view of a square of the sky, there is a wall of classical music records, also filled with many books; but in a sense, the world is my working space. I write on my way from somewhere to elsewhere.
Make an elevator pitch for your shortlisted work in 30 words or less.
Death is the theme, but it is not the only one; it is more related to how human reinvents themselves on the path that leads to death.
Could you share a pivotal moment as you were writing this work?
Deep into the night, my child breathes softly besides me. Faraway, the flames of an oil refinery flicker in the sky, as if holding a promise. This is a pivotal moment.
If you could give one advice to yourself when you were writing this book, what would it be?
Not writing for any specific audience; writing for myself, for the discovery of the world's reality.
