Cracks
Cracks is Aw Seow Pooi's first poetry collection, which features her creations from the past three years. As the name suggests, Cracks equates to the cracks and traces interspersed along a person's daily journey. The poet believes that the memory of the past and present will collapse, and that the future is just an uncrossed bridge. Every word written is thus a metaphor of life and death.

Short Notes with Aw Seow Pooi
What does "Mata Hati | 心眼 | Eye of the Heart | மனக்கண் வழியே" mean to you in writing?
For me, the eye of the heart means having an extra pair of eyes that I cannot see. I don't even know if our eyes have ever met. The eye of the heart feels somewhat distant. What I prefer is a heart that has ears.
What does your writing process look like? Do you type or write? Are there multiple drafts, long pauses, or sudden bursts of activity?
My writing process is quite ordinary. I use both handwriting and typing, and I can even record sentences. I don't create drafts; I write whenever I feel like it, as long as I can write. If I can't write, then I let it go. I don't dwell on the spark of inspiration, and I haven't yet experienced a burst of creative activity.
What does your working space look like?
It doesn't really matter, as long as I'm alone in a quiet place where I can talk to myself.
Make an elevator pitch for your shortlisted work in 30 words or less.
Cracks imprints life and living through poetry, with each crack representing every moment experienced, regardless of depth.
Could you share a pivotal moment as you were writing this work?
There wasn't any particular pivotal moment, but when I finished the last poem, 'Exit,' I felt a sense of peace.
If you could give one advice to yourself when you were writing this book, what would it be?
One piece of advice I gave myself when writing this book is to Try Not To Look Back and Never Repeat Myself.
