The short story form enjoys an enduring popularity among readers in Singapore. This panel of academics considers both the future and the history of the short story in the different language and literary traditions in Singapore—Malay, Chinese, English and Tamil. Speakers will highlight what they see as milestones in the development of the form, discuss the work of significant writers, as well as examine the issues and challenges they see facing the form in the future. What are some important and interesting similarities among writers across language and culture who choose to write in this genre? What are some key differences?

In this session, short story authors who write in various languages and translators discuss the cultural and linguistic elements they seek and hope to preserve or adapt whenever a work is translated into English or another language. What considerations does one have to bear in mind when the audience is international?
