A Walk Through Rosie's Neighbourhood

Inspired by Rosie and the Mamak Shop by Rachelyn Gordon, this interactive workshop invites preschoolers on a sensory-rich story walk through a Singaporean neighbourhood. Through play and drama, children are immersed in Rosie’s world as they imagine the stops she makes before reaching the mamak shop.

At each stop, children explore hands-on stations such as spice-scented trays, sari fabrics, old-school games, and mini food displays (activities may vary depending on resource availability). They then express their appreciation of Singaporean culture by using their knowledge of their own neighbourhoods to create a simple storyboard.

This session nurtures language development, creativity, and cultural awareness through storytelling, sensory play, and visual expression.

This programme is eligible for the Tote Board Arts Funding.

ABOUT FACILITATOR

Rachelyn Gordon

Rachelyn Gordon is a Singaporean children’s author and creative writing educator who believes in the power of stories to build empathy, communication, and critical thinking skills in young readers and writers. She runs workshops that help children explore real-world issues, find their voice, and write with heart.

She is the author of Rosie and the Mamak Shop, Curly, and Frank — a tender yet funny picture book about grief, resilience, and the power of laughter. Rachelyn holds a Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education (graduating with an Education Merit Award) and has taught in international schools, where she held leadership roles.

Rachelyn now focuses on creating and facilitating creative writing programmes that move beyond standardised worksheets, encouraging children to think critically, ask questions, and solve problems through story.

When she’s not writing or teaching, she’s reading picture books or making dinosaur sounds ("RAWR!") with her son, Samuel.
