From Shapes to Stories: Mastering Character Design

What if you could turn a bowl of laksa into a manga heroine or transform yourself into a superhero? In this engaging 3-part workshop, students explore the dynamic world of character design through the lens of pop culture, anime, fashion, and local heritage.

Designed for aspiring illustrators, storytellers, and pop culture fans, this hands-on programme equips students with the foundational skills to conceptualise and develop original characters. Participants will experiment with silhouettes, facial expressions, cultural elements, and poses to breathe life into their creations. By the end of the programme, each student will design a fully realised character—whether a mascot, manga avatar, or game persona—and learn how visual storytelling can represent identity, culture, and creativity.

Digital artworks can be adapted into stickers, cards, or zines (optional with additional printing costs).

This workshop's duration and objectives can be customised to fit your students' levels and skillsets!

ABOUT FACILITATOR

Foo Swee Chin

Foo Swee Chin’s prolific career as a comic book artist and illustrator spans more than two decades. She has collaborated with American and Japanese publishing houses and game developers. Her versatility as an artist allows her to easily cross genres from dark, twisty and melancholic to sweet and whimsical. She has great empathy for animals and environmental causes and always curious and open to new ideas.
