"Every picture tells a story" - this quote was widely used in the U.S.A. in the early 20th century especially in advertisement campaigns throughout the country. In a wordless picture book, the whole story is in the pictures. Within meaningful facilitation from adults, children can gain many skills in literacy development. Some of these skills include directionality; an important pre-reading literacy skill for beginning readers, inference (which is a higher-order thinking skill) or making sense of the story with cues from images, vocabulary building, creating their own stories and so on.

In a multi-cultural and multi-racial Singapore, wordless picture books offer the opportunity for multilingual use. This session will cover the benefits as well as ideas for using wordless picture books with very young children.
