Be part of Translation Day Singapore 2025!

Are you passionate about languages? Do you have a fun, creative idea that could get people thinking about how we move between languages and cultures?

We’re inviting all—artists, educators, language lovers, or anyone with a great idea—to propose fun programmes for Translation Day Singapore 2025, happening on 27–28 September at The Arts House.

We’re looking for interactive programmes that explore translation, language, and multilingual expression not just as practical tools, but as forms of play, connection, and storytelling.

Selected proposals will receive an honorarium of SGD500 and the support of the Singapore Book Council team to bring your programme to life during Translation Day Singapore.

This is your chance to shape how people experience translation, not just as a technical skill, but as a creative, playful, and deeply human act.

What We’re Looking For

We’re open to a wide range of ideas, as long as your programme:

  • Explores or celebrates translation, language, or multilingualism
  • Is designed for general audiences
  • Is interactive, participatory, or performance-based
  • Involves at least two languages, including dialects
Some formats might include workshops, language games, interactive installations, or something completely unexpected. Surprise us!

What You’ll Receive

If your proposal is selected, you’ll get:

  • An honorarium of SGD500 to cover facilitator fees, materials, and basic programme costs
  • Logistical and publicity support from SBC
  • A platform to share your work with a wide and curious audience

Who Can Apply

Anyone! You don’t need to be a professional curator or artist. We welcome:

  • First-time programmers
  • Collectives and informal groups
  • Multilingual individuals and communities
  • Anyone excited about translation and language

About Translation Day Singapore

The Translation Day Singapore is a new initiative that aims to raise the public awareness of translation and celebrate the diverse linguistic landscape of Singapore. By introducing participants to the diversity of languages spoken in Singapore and showcasing translation as both an art and a skill, Translation Day Singapore (TDS) seeks to foster greater understanding between the many linguistic and cultural communities in Singapore through the bridge of translation.

TDS is anchored by two main components: The Singapore Translation Symposium, a previously standalone event, which focuses on professional development and discourse in the field of literary translation; and public programmes, which target the general public and language enthusiasts.

The objectives of Translation Day Singapore Translation are to:

  1. Recognise and highlight the diversity of languages used in Singapore, while promoting ii deeper appreciation for Singapore’s multicultural fabric.
  2. To showcase how literary translation can be a creative tool for fostering understanding between different linguistic and cultural communities.
  3. To strengthen the professional development of literary translators in enhancing their skills and gaining more industry knowledge.
