Latha, well-known Singapore writer and poet, discusses her works, their purpose as well as Singapore Tamil literature in the international Tamil literature scene. Latha will also share about what is required to write better and how to integrate reality and creativity in one’s works. 

The session will look at the importance of reading to a writer and Latha opens up about the freedom she gains through her writing. 

This session is in Tamil and is curated and moderated by poet Nepolian. 

 

SPEAKER

Latha (real name K. Kanagalatha) is the author of two collections of poetry in Tamil: Theeveli (Firespace) (2003),  Paampuk Kaattil Oru Thaazhai (A Screwpin in Snakeforest) (2004) and a short story collection, Nan Kolai Seyium Penkkal (The Women I Murder) (2007) which won the Singapore Literature Prize for Tamil Fiction in 2008. Her short story collection was translated to English and published under the reworked title, The Goddess in the Living Room, in 2014 by Epigram Books. Her works have since been translated into French and German as well. Her poems and short stories have been published in anthologies and various Tamil literary journals in India, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, France and Singapore. She has been interviewed by literary platform Writing the City and various news outlets such as The Straits Times and Yahoo! News Singapore. She is currently the Associate Editor of Tamil Murasu, Singapore’s Tamil daily newspaper. 

 

MODERATOR 

Nepolian writes Poems, Short stories, Essays, Literary Criticism, Screen plays and Songs. His work has appeared in Newspapers, Journals, Literary magazines, TV, Cinema and Websites in Both Singapore and Overseas. He has published two Poetry collections: “Naanum en karuppuk kuthiraiyum” (2002) and “Kaanaamal pona kavithaikal” (2013).  His works have bagged many prizes and distinctions in both Singapore and Overseas. He is the first Lyricist from Singapore to write songs for Tamil Movies. The famous song, “Un thalai mudi uthirvathaikkooda ...” from the Tamil Movie, “Kaathalil Vizhunthaen” was written by him. A Civil Engineer by qualification, With his serving as a trainer in the Poetry workshop for School / College students and Public, Acting as a judge in literary and fine arts competitions, His rich contributions to literature, cinema, music, short film, stage programs, and his holding a Master’s Degree in Tamil, Nepolian has proved himself as a versatile Personality.
