Have you ever felt like crying with a fictional character or celebrating their downfall? In this workshop, you will discover what makes characters come alive for authors and readers. You will also create or develop characters of your own.
Learn how to:
- Analyse character building in texts
- Develop your own characters for fiction or non-fiction
- Critique characters
The workshop is structure as 45 minutes work with a 15 minute break over three hours.
This workshop is suitable for writers of fiction, especially novels, and non-fiction, especially long-form portrait features.
This programme will be conducted in-person at the Singapore Book Council if restrictions permit. Otherwise it will be converted into a virtual workshop conducted via the Zoom platform. Participants do not need a Zoom account to take part in the workshop.

FACILITATOR
Akshita Nanda is the author of two novels: Beauty Queens of Bishan (Penguin Random House SEA) and Nimita's Place (Epigram Books) which co-won the 2020 Singapore Literature Prize for English Fiction. Nimita's Place was also adapted for the stage in 2019 by T:>Works, and shortlisted for the 2019 Singapore Book Awards. Akshita has worked in a cancer research lab; as an editor of books; and as a correspondent for The Straits Times. She has a master in international affairs from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy and is interested in oceans, futures thinking and migration.

Cancellation & Substitution
The workshop can be cancelled or postponed two weeks before the workshop date if the minimum number of participants is not met. Participants will be fully refunded for workshops cancelled by us.
Participants who are unable to attend a workshop they have registered for are to inform us of the reason two weeks before the workshop date. They will be fully refunded in the event of extenuating and mitigating circumstances (E.g. illness, bereavement, accidents). Those who inform us up to five (5) working days before the workshop date will receive a 50% refund. Participants can also attend another course at the same value within the same year.
Upon registration, you are deemed to have read and understood the cancellation, withdrawal and substitution policy and accept the terms contained therein.
