This masterclass will focus on the development of the craft of translation and how to work in the Mainland Chinese market.
This masterclass comprises two parts. The first will focus on the development of the craft of translation. The discussion of the craft of literary translation will focus on challenges unique to the literary translation field, and will give particular attention to issues like translating humour, culture, and idioms, and capturing the voice of the original piece for a new audience. The class will explore specific strategies for approaching these problem areas with group discussions on specific case studies.
The second half of the course will address questions regarding working in the literary translation industry, with specific emphasis on working in Mainland China. Topics explored here will include:
- Working with an Editor
- Knowing Your Rights as a Translator
- Knowing Your Obligations as a Translator
- Setting Your Expectations for the China Market
- Handling Cultural Differences
Some strategies aimed at avoiding and settling conflicts will also be discussed, particularly focusing on how one might best navigate the China publishing market.
This course is suitable for: Literary translators, translator or diploma holder (translation) with an interest in literary translation. To gain maximum benefit from the masterclass, participants should have some experience in translation, preferably:
- Two years experience in literary translation or
- At least translated one entire literary publication that has been published or
- A diploma in translation

Registration is on a first-come-first-served basis and workshop fees must be paid before the workshop. If the minimum number of participants is not met for the class, the organisers will inform all participants about possible postponement and cancellation, two weeks before the workshop date.
Cancellation & Substitution
The workshop can be cancelled or postponed two weeks before the workshop date if the minimum number of participants is not met. Participants will be fully refunded for workshops cancelled by us.
Participants who are unable to attend a workshop they have registered for are to inform us of the reason two weeks before the workshop date. They will be fully refunded in the event of extenuating and mitigating circumstances (E.g. illness, bereavement, accidents) . Those who inform us up to five (5) working days before the workshop date will receive a 50% refund. Participants can also attend another course at the same value within the same year.
