The Stadium –
Architeture for the New Global Culture
Launch review by
Anita Paul:
Periplus has done it again! It was a unique invitation card. The image on the front of the card was that of a stadium - Estádio da Luz, Lisbon, Portugal. I was wondering what a stadium had to do with the Book Council. I flipped the card over to see that it was a book launch – a book on modern architecture of stadiums around the world. I read further and Periplus published the book. After the awesome launch Periplus had organised in March this year, I had to go for this one. What a set up! The foyer at Circle 3 of the Esplanade Concert Hall was converted into a classy bar. An exhibition of the photographic images found in the book adorned a segment of the foyer. People immersed themselves to the comfort of the set up and ambience. The champagne served was divine…
People were so calm and so comfortable and then it was speech time - the author was introduced. He was a very soft spoken man and yet he had presence. Rod Sheard emphasised the importance of sports and highlighted the impact that sports had made on lives. He thought it would be appropriate to launch this book at the time the International Olympic Committee had convened to bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. His career as an architect spans approximately over 25 years and he specialises in stadium design. He then introduced Patrick Bingham – Hall. Patrick is an architectural photographer who has worked with Rod for about 10 years. He was a rather witty man and you could see his passion for his work. With the speeches over, it was time for book signing. I made sure I got the signatures of both Rod and Patrick. Get the book even if you are not a fan of architecture. The photographic images in the book are really awesome. A job well done again to Periplus and I can’t wait to attend the next launch.
Book Review
The Stadium features 18 sporting venues worldwide and contextualises the evolvement of sports since the codification of sports in the 19th Century. The book also examines the increased significance of the stadium as an architectural icon. Many of the stadia featured in the book have been venues to successful sporting events in the last decade.
