NOTE
It’s the fourth quarter of 2005 which starts buzzing with loads
of activities. The Book Council is pleased to inform you that registration
for the Asian Congress of Storytellers and the Asian Children’s
Writers and Illustrators Conference is now open. For those of you who
have not registered for the National Education Seminar please do so as
registrsation closes soon. The Singapore Writers Festival 2005 was officially
launched on 26 August 2005 and will be on till 4 September 2005. And…yes…another
book launch for which I was asked to be the MC on the day itself. Read
on to find out what happened and for more events in the August 2005 issue
of e-WordNEWS.

Engaging Hearts and
Minds
National Education through Storytelling!
In September 2004 and March 2005, the National Book Development Council of Singapore organised storytelling seminars for teachers, National Education (NE) coordinators, and in fact anyone who wished to use stories to communicate ideas. These seminars were a huge success. Participants learned how powerful storytelling could be in communicating messages to their audiences. Here’s what they said:

STORYTELLERS
10 – 11 November 2005
Good storytelling is powerful. It transports you to magical places and
takes you through wonderful experiences. This is none other than the Asian
Congress of Storytellers . The congress features storytellers from Asia
and around the world. With bigger names and more variety, ACS 2005 will
truly be the storytelling event of Asia. For five years now, people from
various professions and backgrounds have been faithfully attending ACS
and they leave inspired and equipped to use storytelling in their professional
and personal lives. The National Book Development Council of Singapore
is proud to present the Asian Congress of Storytellers 2005. A star-studded
cast of speakers have been lined up this year to share their knowledge
and skills of storytelling

STORYTELLERS’ SHOWCASE
12 – 15 November 2005
Organised by the National
Book Development Council of Singapore, the Storytellers’ Showcase
is entertainment at its purest with the showcasing of the best in storytelling.
First introduced in 2003, the Showcase is unique as there is no other
show of its kind in Singapore. It brings together some of the biggest
names in Storytelling on stage to tell their fascinating tales. The storytellers
come from Asia, Europe, USA, New Zealand and Australia. They all have
one thing in common – they tell Asian Stories in different styles
and flavours against the background and tradition of the respective Asian
countries. This year being the Hans Christian Anderson bicentenary, we
have a teller who will inspire you with H. C. Anderson tales. The Storytellers’
Showcase 2005 promises a journey through a world where Asian tales come
to life. So come hear.

ASIAN CHILDREN’S
WRITERS AND ILLUSTRATORS CONFERENCE
17 – 18 November 2005
The Book Council is proud to present the Asian Children’s Writers
and Illustrators Conference (ACWIC) 2005 for the fifth year! ACWIC is
the only event in Singapore, and possibly Asia that caters to a select
group of individuals who have chosen to devote their creative energy to
children’s literature. This is an ideal platform for you to exchange
tips with experienced professionals and gain insights into new and innovative
ways of writing and illustrating for children. Enjoy stimulating presentations
and conversations and the opportunity to attend workshops on diverse topics
where you can learn additional skills. This year, you can also look forward
to a manuscript critique session and a book launch by a local author.
We invite you to join us at ACWIC 2005. This is where you will find the

not sure if it is worth continuing? Here is your chance to get a professional

LONDON BOOK FAIR 2006 - BREIFING

The Book Council together with the Geylang East Community Library orgainsed
a talk by Ms Emma House from the London Book Fair Committee 2006. The
talk was held on 29 August 2006 at the Geylang East Community Library,
Merpati Hall, 3rd Floor at 2.00pm.
Ms Emma House was in Singapore to introduce the London Book Fair 2006 (LBF). Over 23,000 visitors from 108 countires visited this trade-only event which has been billed as the 2nd most important book fair in the world. Within LBF, the organisers have a section for International Rights Centre where literary agents, publishers, rights managers meet to discuss trade. LBF 2006 is moving to a new venue - ExCel London and this was an opportunity to hear from Emma House on the accomodation, transportation, entertainment outlets for those who may eventually be exhibiting or visiting the exhibition.

FRANKFURT BOOK FAIR 2005
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
These dates have long been booked in everyone’s diary: the Frankfurt
Book Fair 2005 is scheduled from 19 to 23 October.
This year’s event comes with several new exhibition areas, consolidating still further its position as the leading international fair for the book and media industry. New features include the 1st Frankfurt Antiquarian Fair, the “PresseMesse - Trade, Popular and International Press” and a collective exhibition “Games & Playing”.

Singapore Writers’ Festival 2005
Friday, 26 August – Sunday 4 September 2005
With the theme Text In The City, this biennial festival kicked off on Friday, 26 August 2005 with a rousing and energetic performance by Spoken Word group 8th Wonder from the USA. Held at the Drama Centre, National Library, it was an evening filled with a networking session, messages, speeches and a panel discussion. With a variety of genres and celebrating the literary word in the four offical languages the Singapore Writers’ Festival 2005 provides a platform for exchange and showcase of both local and international writers. The festival features 80 events in 10 days. Copies of the programme guide are available at public libraries, Kinokuniya Bookstores, cafes, shopping centres and various publics places.

LadyFest Singapore Poetry Session

LadyFest Singapore (previously known as GirlFest
Singapore), is a non-profit group that aims to provide the artistic Singaporean
Lady Scene of the past, present, future and a place to call their own.
The group aims to recognize and be a platform for female talent in Singapore.
Musical events organized by the group have been featuring local musical
groups that have one or more female talents. This is the first year LadyFest
is promoting the arts such as photography, art performance, video works
and poetry.

Golden Point Award Night 2005

The Golden Point Award Night will be one of glitter and glamour as the winners of this year’s Golden Point Award are announced. Hosted by Nadya Hutagalong and Adrian Pang come hear celebrity readings by Aaron Aziz, Melody Chen, Ellamaran and Patricia Mok.
The event is by invitation only though limited tickets are available to the public by online registration at http://www.swf.sg. It is to be held at the Drama Centre, 3rd Floor at the National Library. An evening not to be missed!

NUS Literary Society Creative Writing Competition
The competition is open to full-time students from pre-university (e.g.
junior colleges, polytechnics, centralised institutions) and tertiary
institutions. Students who are studying in overseas universities and wish
to participate must be stationed in or have a permanent address in Singapore
at least for the next one year. Each entrant can send in a maximum of
5 poems and 2 short stories. The short stories should not be more than
3000 words in length. Each poem/short story must be submitted with a $2.00
fee. The judges are CYRIL WONG for poetry and GWEE LI SUI for short stories.

The closing date for all entries is 30 October 2005. Winners will be notified via email or phone. Late entries will be disqualified.

Festival – Ubud, Bali
Writers from Singapore are invited to participate in the Writers’
Festival which is to be held in Udud, Bali from 6 – 11 October 2005.
Writers should seek their own funding and the organisers will provide
accommodation. This inaugural festival had been a huge
success previously
